April Public Campaign Report Demonstrates Grassroots Support

SILVER SPRING, Md. — Will Jawando, Democrat for County Council, filed a campaign finance report Tuesday showing an additional 300 contributions totaling more than $25,000 to his campaign — making him eligible to drawn more than $70,000 in additional matching funds from the county’s Public Election Fund.

With this campaign finance report, Jawando is expected to bring the total match to more than $166,000 to date in this campaign. That includes more than 260 new in-county donations, bringing the total number of unique donations from Montgomery County residents to nearly 650. At-large county council candidates can pull down up to $250,000 in matching funds.

“It’s a privilege and a responsibility to win the support of so many people in Montgomery County. I’m grateful to have won the confidence of so many of our neighbors,” Jawando said. “I’m committed to the principles that bind us together in Montgomery County — diverse, welcoming communities, great schools, economic opportunity for all, and smarter land-use planning that protects our environment while providing walkable, transit-oriented neighborhoods with fair, affordable housing. That’s the Montgomery County Promise, and that’s why I’m running.”

The campaign finance announcement comes a day after Montgomery County Executive Isiah “Ike” Leggett endorsed Jawando, calling him “a progressive leader with a lifelong record of public service to Montgomery County.”

Other progressive organizations that have endorsed Jawando include the Sierra Club, SEIU Local 500, Montgomery County Education Association, CASA in Action, UFCW Local 1994 MCGEO, Progressive Maryland, and Laborers International Union of North America (LiUNA). Among county officials, Jawando has also been endorsed by Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy.

The June 26 Democratic primary will decide which four candidates among a crowded field of 33 candidates will appear on the November general election ballot.
