Will Jawando recognized for environmental leadership
SILVER SPRING, Md. — The Montgomery County group of Sierra Club, representing 6,000 people across the county, today endorsed Will Jawando, candidate for Montgomery County Council At-Large, in the Democratic primary set for June 26.
In its endorsement statement, local Sierra Club group singled out “significant and measurable solutions” to climate change as a priority for this election. Jawando, a father of three and civil rights attorney who grew up in Silver Spring and has worked to engage diverse communities in the environmental justice movement, welcomed the endorsement.
“Montgomery County offers a unique promise to its citizens – a promise about a quality of life that covers not just education and economic growth, but also the promise of clean air, greenspace and more,” Jawando said. “The only way we can keep the Montgomery County Promise is to address climate change at the local level – with consistent, sustainable and smart planning that protects our air, our waterways, our agricultural preserves and greenspace, and engages all of our communities, even in the most dense neighborhoods.”
Dave Sears, chair of the Montgomery County group of Sierra Club said, “We are excited about the
prospects of our endorsed candidates focusing their skills, experience, and knowledge on making our
county a national model for how local governments address the climate emergency facing our planet.”
