Prosperity:
Combat Our Climate Emergency

"We are very fond of blaming the poor for destroying the environment. But often it is the powerful, including governments, that are responsible."
— Nobel Prize Laureate Wangari Maathai

The Issue

Our planet is on the brink of irreversible climate consequences. The scientific consensus is irrefutable: our planet is undergoing rapid and detrimental shifts because of human activities. The consequences of inaction are dire and far-reaching, impacting not only the environment but also economies, global security, and social stability.

Congress must pursue immediate and aggressive intervention by transitioning to sustainable practices, mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, and fostering international cooperation to safeguard our planet for present and future generations. Time is of the essence, and addressing climate change is not just a moral obligation — the survival of our planet is at stake.

What I’ve Done So Far

My record on the County Council is reflective of acting with urgency to address the climate emergency. I was vital in passing "Maryland's First Comprehensive Building Decarbonization Legislation." I also actively supported bills that established dedicated funding for our County's Green Bank, created benchmarking and performance standards for building energy use, ensured forest conservation through a no-net-loss standard, and expanded our C-PACE program to new construction. I was also proud to collaborate with U.S. Energy Secretary Granholm to introduce SolarAPP+ to Montgomery County, streamlining the solar permit process and making solar energy more user-friendly. I will be an outspoken advocate in the U.S. Senate to preserve our environment and address our climate crisis.

What I Will Do in the Senate

  • Our vision for the future is clear and ambitious: an America powered by 100% clean, renewable energy. This is not just about reducing our carbon footprint—it's about leading the world in pioneering sustainable solutions, driving innovation, and creating jobs that will define the 21st century. For this to happen, the U.S. must take the initiative and become a global climate leader. I will support legislation in the Senate that gets us there.

  • To reshape our future, we must reconsider where we invest our present. Redirecting the billions currently subsidizing fossil fuels towards clean energy innovations is not merely a budgetary decision—it's a statement of our values. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that removing fossil fuel subsidies would save taxpayers over $97 billion in just the next ten years. By putting an end to fossil fuel subsidies, we affirm our commitment to a planet where the health of our environment and communities takes precedence over short-term profit.

  • In our pursuit of a cleaner future, we must support the workers and communities historically dependent on the fossil fuel industry. A just transition means investing in economic programs that help Americans who hold or have previously held jobs in the fossil fuel industry to be retrained to work in a green economy. We cannot allow countless Americans to be left in the dust as we decarbonize our environment.

  • The Chesapeake Bay is one of Maryland’s most precious resources and must be protected at all costs. I will work to secure funding for programs that protect the bay from pollution and clean up already dumped waste. I will also work to get federal protections for the bay, such as recognition as a part of the National Parks Service.
