Dignity:
Invest in People-Centered Transportation & Infrastructure
The Issue
Transportation isn't just about moving cars, it's about linking people and communities. We need to make our methods of getting around modern, safe, and climate-friendly. When families spend hours commuting each day, it wears on our social connection, our earth, and childhood outcomes.
What I’ve Done So Far
Growing up in Montgomery County, I watched too many of my friends’ parents struggle with access to transportation, often leaving them as children alone without adult supervision. I watched how systems failed my peers and led to different outcomes than my own.
While I was able to run around after school at my mom’s work in downtown Silver Spring, friends of mine were what I call “decision kids.” Every day after school, because their parents had excruciating commutes to and from work, my peers had to make their own decisions. Sometimes those decisions were to play as kids, other times they were exposed to older kids who didn’t have their best interests in mind.
With the purple line, much of this could have been avoided. I have thought about this every day as a legislator and that’s why I’ve fought to expand transit and transit equity so that every family has access to affordable and safe transportation to and from work and school, and throughout their communities.
What I Will Do in the Senate
-
President Biden’s Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act was a generational accomplishment seeking to rebuild America by dedicating $1.25 trillion in capital funding over eight years. But securing this funding was just the first step. Implementing this act requires careful planning, transparency, and collaboration at all levels of government. I will prioritize investment in Maryland’s infrastructure including investments in Metro, the Purple Line, and building Baltimore’s Red Line.

Passenger vehicles make up over 16% of our nation's total greenhouse gas emissions. To make progress, we have to accelerate investments in electric vehicles and charging infrastructure.

Our streets must be sanctuaries for all, whether on foot, bike, or behind the wheel. Reinventing road safety means inclusive design, technology integration, and awareness campaigns that champion the well-being of every user.
