Justice:
Enshrine Our Voting & Civil Rights
“The vote is precious. It is almost sacred. It is the most powerful non-violent tool we have in a democracy.”
— U.S. Representative John Lewis
The Issue
In a time where right-wing extremists are trying to roll back voting rights and even steal elections, we must stay vigilant to ensure every American is empowered to exercise their right to vote. Whether it's restoring acts that protect voter rights, ensuring seamless registration, or combating unfair gerrymandering, the march toward a truly inclusive democracy is a journey we must all undertake together.
What I’ve Done So Far
I wholeheartedly believe that the right to vote is sacred. Inspired by one of my mentors, Congressman John Lewis, I have dedicated myself to protecting this fundamental right. As a local leader, I have organized against real attempts to suppress the voices of Black and Brown communities. I have sponsored new funds for our Board of Elections to conduct targeted outreach to historically disenfranchised constituents. And to keep money out of politics, I am proud to have voted to fund our county's public financing law for local elections.
What I Will Do in the Senate
-
Every American voice should be heard, and every vote should count. We must restore and revitalize the Voting Rights Act to ensure that no individual is unjustly barred from the ballot box. Yet Republicans continue to block legislation that would protect the right to vote. I will vote to pass this crucial law that would remove barriers to the ballot box in areas that have historically disenfranchised voters of color.
-
Imagine an America where every eligible voter is automatically registered, and where access to the ballot is straightforward and inclusive. By advocating for automatic registration and expanded voter access, we're championing an America where every voice is not just heard, but actively encouraged and celebrated.
-
Maryland is historically one of the most gerrymandered states in the nation. We need federal oversight that protects fair districts and ensures proper representation – no matter which party it advantages.

The disastrous ruling in Citizens United opened the door to unaccountable corporate influence in politics by allowing dark money organizations to cast a shadow over our political process. Congress must pass legislation to counteract the dangerous impact of this ruling and remove dark money from our political system.
